The long awaited season 2 of Bravo's show Work of Art debuted yesterday and I am right back to loving and hating the show.
I find it interesting to watch the artists work and am admittedly more interested in the ideas that spark their creations rather than the finished pieces because, frankly, I think the majority of the art sucks.
I have to give the artists credit though because I could never complete a work of art, showdown style, in a few hours. Mosaic art just doesn't work like that.
I decided on my favorite artists within the first 5 minutes of the show...
I'm rooting for The Sucklord, despite his ridiculous self-imposed title. How can you not appreciate someone that reveres The Lord of the Rings trilogy and wears his hair in a faux-hawk/rat-tail combo?
And Lola is my other fave. She's adorable and seemed to get shoved into the underdog role right away. It was nice to see her come out on top in the end.
I'm a bit surprised that they kept Bayete after he created that crappy excuse for a collage. Apparently I know nothing at all about art because that decision completely dumbfounded me. At least Ugo's artwork had personality!
Watching the critiques and listening to the comments made by the art "experts" reinforces my belief that art really is what you make of it. There seems to be no formal guidelines that critics use to determine what is good and why it is good. It's all a bit mystical really...and that irks me.
Give me some serious feedback without all the mystical mumbo jumbo and I'm a happy camper. Ram industry buzz words down my throat as you verbal punch holes in my creative process and you'll lose me every time.
So who are your faves and why?
It was fun to get back into, wasn't it? I agree, I would've gotten rid of the crappy collage and kept Ugo, though he was looking like a one trick pony up to that point (and based on his portfolio). Sucklord cracked me up and I'm rooting for him just because of his personality, but I really don't care for his art. Artwise, I liked Dustin, the one who did the clown self portrait. He's done some very mosaicy things, too! (With crayons and toys, did you view his portfolio online?) I also like what Michelle does with paper. Looking forward to the next episode. :)
ReplyDeleteI agree, UGO should have stayed..
ReplyDeleteI couldn't find any artwork from the artists online. Where are you finding the portfolios?
ReplyDeleteI agree about the crayon "mosaics" - cool to see ppl doing something that relates to our art although I've seen them before too!
I love the paper sculptures. Such a simple medium but she stretches it. I'm gonna have to try it at some point. One of my fave children's poems was illustrated by paper sculpture. Will have to upload pics.
It's kind of awkward to get to, hope this link works: http://www.bravotv.com/work-of-art/season-2/photos?field_collection_nid=23806
